None of us need reminding of the danger of just being alive and going about our daily business, anywhere in this post 9/11 world. But remarks are not the problem - a terrorist masquerading as an average traveller will aim to blend in and not draw any attention to himself with something like 'innapropriate remarks', whatever they are. And who makes that decision anyway? I remember the signs warning against joking and of the seriousness of entering the US that used to be posted on US border crossings. The announcment you heard is much nmore insidious. The levels of fear that officials throughout your country have managed to develop in the name of order and control of the general population is , well, frightening to outsiders. You all seem to accept it without question.
Alison, Colleen, and Rhoda.. Thanks so much for your commments and taking the time to check out my work. I think all of us in this country, like alison points out, have a level of acceptance (in the name of "fighting terrorism") that prevents us from questioning both the advisibility and the effectiveness of these new measures.
