Nice Work! I am very impressed. I like the colors and the fabric. I am also a newbie, but not yet as skilled as you are.

I am not sure if I am one of those you were hoping to get a critique from, but here goes!

I love the movement and the balance in this piece. The color combinations work. I do find that my eye wants to stop at the panel on the right (pink) instead of keep moving. I see you have the blue or green in every other segment but that one. Maybe if there was a slight hint of that in the right panel my eye would rest there for so long. I do enjoy looking at it - it has a great rythm to it! Super Job!

Patricia...fantastic work! I love what you've done, and think with one or two small tweaks you can go from really good to even better!

To me (and please, this is just me, not gospel, so feel free to disregard ...h opefully the comments will help you see what, if anything, **you** want to do !) the piece is heavy on the right...my eye goes right with the ribbons, down the bright orange, and stops on the green silk square.

I love how the four "quadrants" are divided and echo each other in color, the small pieces on the bottom. But somehow the green feels a little too large? What if it were a bit shorter?

Also, I like the comment about the movement of the eye. What if you took ONE of the colors from the upper left quadrant and repeat it in the green square, having it come down towards the right side then bend left to lead the eye back to the small pieces, which in a way point up to the large quadrant, and then back around?

Another option might be to see what it looks like if you were to add super skinny bits of the stripes on the left to the lines for the notes--the orange stripes coming down-- and tone down the orange a bit.

Alternatively, don't tone down the orange, but punch up the color by making that backwards "L" shape on the green square and adding a bit of the brighter orange to the small panels...not a lot, just enough to help balance things and keep the eye moving.

???

You've got a great piece, and you've got a lot of great quilts ahead of you, I can tell! I'm still learning all the art side of thing (have been sewing for four decades...since I was 6),so PLEASE feel free to disregard whatever I say. The whole point of comments, I think, is to help you clarify what YOU want!

Cheers, Sarah

Hey Pat...looks like we're trading blog posts.... yours came through as "no reply" (sometimes I hate blogger LOL)!

Anyway, if you want, you can write to me at sarah@sarahannsmith.com, and thanks! Glad you like my African guy. He was for sale for mongo bucks, of course no takers, and I think maybe I'm going to take him off the available list... I'd hate to part with him!
